A holiday to New York. Should we go 3 days or a week?

My girlfriend and I live in London and are planning to go to New york for a short holiday. I’d prefer to go for about a week (although it would cost quite a bit more) because of the jetlag and adjusting to the time difference.

but my girlfriend suggests that we should go for a 3-day weekend because we would eventually get bored of the sights and it would be a lot cheaper. Can anyone help us make a decision?

There’s no question that three days would be cheaper, but there is plenty to do in New York that will take up a whole week of your time, and you still won’t have seen everything there is to see!

In order to figure out what would be best for you, I recommend starting to figure out what kind of trip you want to take. Do you want to do the touristy thing and see all the tourist sites? Do you want to go shopping and take advantage of New York stores? Do you want to explore the artsy parts of the city? Do you want to see as many plays as possible? Do you want to eat out a lot and explore the culinary offerings of NYC?

Once you figure out what kind of a trip you want, you can see for yourself if you think you’d get bored after three days, or if a week would be great for you.

I also think that if you’re coming all the way to New York from London, it would be a shame to only come for three days and then leave, just when you’ve managed to get over jet lag!

Good luck!

Sportsbook is Serving Up a Holiday Feast!

THE BRADY BUNCH WELCOMES THE HUNGRY BEARS!

Once again bettors at Superook.com, who doubted Belichick’s Patriots, missed out on an easy score last Sunday in Green Bay. Not only did New England record a shutout, they knocked Brett Farve out of the game. Grossman looked very shaky in the Big Apple and now he gets same defensive schemes, but against better players!

RAVENS HAVE NAILS FOR STEELERS COFFIN!

At 4-6 the Steelers will need to win out to even have a remote shot at the playoffs. The Ravens are 8-2 and Air McNair is alive and well in Maryland. Big Ben pulled a rabbit out of his hat in the dying seconds, but the magic show ends this weekend, against a very talented defense.

49ERS ARE HEADING TO THE PENTHOUSE?

At 5-5 and winners of three in a row the San Francisco 49ers head to the “Show Me State” to face a reeling 4-6 St. Louis Rams team. Frank Gore has been incredible for San Fran and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner is a huge boost for second year quarterback Alex Smith. The Rams are favored by -6 and this suggests the books are begging gamblers to take the dog!

WOUNDED EAGLES MAY GET TRAMPLED BY COLTS!

The City of Brotherly Love is in a state of mourning, as quarterback Donovan McNabb is back on the shelf. The dreaded ACL injury has felled the former Syracuse grad and now the Eagles must head to Indy. The Colts are probably quietly celebrating the fact that they lost, as they did not need the pressure of another possible unbeaten season. Eagles must decide between Garcia or Feeley!

REMEMBER THE TITANS!

The New York Giants are in big trouble as they head to Tennessee and a date with the scrappy Titans. Eli is struggling, Tiki looks banged up and their defense is banged up. Tennessee hammered the Eagles and quarterback Vince Young looks very comfortable in Norm Chow’s offense. They can run the ball and PACMAN Jones is an incredible punt returner!

If it rains in New York what can I do to ensure I still have a good holiday?

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but hear me out. Some holiday destinations are just awful in the rain. Is New York still a good holiday destination if it’s raining? I’m going next week and I’ve been told to expect a fair bit of rain. I would have adored a bit of sunshine but, perhaps I’m just not lucky this time.

Will I still have a good time there? What are the best things to do in New York when it rains?

There are lots of things do to when it rains in NYC, you can still shop, go to a Broadway show, go out to eat at a nice restaurant, visit some of the many museums that are there. And that’s just naming a few things, out of many, that you could do. If you like art the Met Museum is an especially a great place to go when it rains, since it takes about a whole day to explore the entire museum anyway.
Basically there are tons indoor activities that you can spend your time doing if it rains. Just find yourself a map and a list of popular attractions and plan out your trip. You might want to even search around online and see if there are any special indoor concerts or events going on during your stay.

I was in NYC last October and not only was it rainy most of the time I was there but it was pretty cold too, but it didn’t bother me at all, I had so much fun that I didn’t even pay much attention to how bad the weather was. And although this may sound silly, running around in the rain in NYC can actually be rather fun! So yeah, personally I would say that NYC is definitely NOT one of those destinations where if it rains you’re going to be absolutely miserable. Rain or shine NYC still a great and fun place if you have a good attitude about it!

Why Books Make the Best Gifts

There’s a holiday marketing campaign going on right now called BOOKS=GIFTS. The program was organized by Random House, with many other publishing companies joining the effort. The goal is to emphasize that books are a more ideal gift than ever this holiday season, with the struggling economy. Many high profile authors like Dan Brown, Christopher Paolini, Judy Blume, Deepak Chopra and Maya Angelou are doing short video clips that share their perspective on why books make great gifts, the gimmick being that each one says “Books make great gifts because… (fill in the blank for each author),” and then “Give… (blank).”

In fact, there are several important reasons why books really do make great gifts, for everyone on your list (and especially for kids), this year and any year. Here are just a few:

* Books are evergreen - they keep on giving, well beyond the day they are received. They give with each read, and if they are subsequently shared or passed down, they keep on giving. They are like presents that can be opened over and over again.

* Books send a message to the recipient beyond that of the book itself. They tell the reader, “I care about you. I think of you as this sort of person, and therefore I think you would enjoy this book.”

* Books educate, inform and inspire. They broaden consciousness and perspective. They also cultivate curiosity, nurture the imagination, and promote a sense of wonder.

* Books provide outstanding long-term value for a relatively low cost.

* Giving young people books as gifts subliminally underscores the connection between reading and the joy of receiving, thus strengthening the association between books and pleasure.

* There are countless types, genres, styles, subjects and authors to choose from, maximizing your opportunity to find something uniquely suited to each recipient.

* If you are overwhelmed by options, or not sure where to begin to find the right book for a loved one, there are myriad resources to help. Your local bookseller is trained to help match the right book to the right person. You can also explore Amazon.com’s “listmania” lists and “Customers who bought this book also explored…” feature. You can pick up a copy of the New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, American Libraries magazine or any number of other publications dedicated to reviewing books. There are even websites geared to helping people find books they love - one to explore is www.goodreads.com.

So give the best gift of all this year. Give books!
