NYC New York City

Everybody loves the Big Apple!

What should a foreigner avoid when visiting New York as a tourist?

Are there any things which are no problem in Europe but could cause some wonder/painfulness/trouble in New York?

Don’t stand in the middle of the sidewalk gawking at the buildings, blocking traffic.
No sandals with socks.
No backpacks on the subway.
Tip at least 15% of your food bill (easy way to remember this is double the tax).

Just make sure you watch where you’re going. I see many people stumble on the sidewalk, because they’re looking up at the buildings, specially if this is their first trip to the Big Apple.

I would also recommend to be aware of your surroundings. Although New York City is a safer city now that it used to be some 20 to 30 years ago, being street smart is very highly recommended.

Good luck

Avoid Central Park during curfew.

For the subway:
* Do not cut through the cars.
* Do not evade the fare
* Do not take up multiple seats.

Those will save you from a summons.

Tipping is really important. I think the rate is 15%.

Not bringing a map, take the subways or buses rather than taxis because they are a lot cheaper, etc.

The main difference: There’s no smoking indoors pretty much anywhere in NYC anymore, so if you’re a smoker, take it outside. Also the drinking age here is 21. Do expect to be asked for ID if you look young, and if you’re under 21, there aren’t many bars or clubs that’ll admit you.

Also, slow walkers drive us nuts here, so stick to the general rule that if you want to walk slowly, or stop and take pictures, etc., move all the way to the right and keep out of the flow of rushing foot traffic.
